The Legacy of Herbalist Dr. Sebi

I learned about Dr. Sebi  when I watched The Last Days of Left Eye, a documentary about the late member of girl group TLC that aired in 2007. Left-Eye spent her last days in Honduras being treated by Dr. Sebi for several conditions, and her physical, mental and spiritual journeys are what sparked my interest in Dr. Sebi.

Dr. Sebi was born Alfredo Bowman in the village of Ilanga, Honduras on November 26th, 1933, and was a world-renowned herbalist, healer, pathologist and biochemist. He is known to have discovered cures for cancer, AIDS, and a number of other diseases.

Like many other Dr. Sebi supporters, I believe that he had become a threat to a multi-billion-dollar medical/pharmaceutical industry that perpetuates sickness for profit. In fact, an increasing number of holistic providers, both licensed and unlicensed, have suspiciously ended up dead over the years. Have you noticed the trend?

Though Dr. Sebi was not a licensed practitioner, he studied, practiced, and worked diligently to perfect his skills and application of knowledge in the area of herbal medicine to heal the human body of known diseases. This wasn’t modern medicine at all; this was ancient, natural medicine.

His grandmother was a herbalist and she, along with another herbalist who was from Mexico, taught Sebi the gift of natural healing and cured “incurable” diseases using plants found in nature. Dr. Sebi saw how effective plant medicine was and began creating his own products, promoting inter-cellular cleansing and revitalization in the human bodyHis African approach to disease diametrically opposed the present Western approach. His research revealed that all manifestation of disease finds its genesis when and where the mucous membrane has been compromised.

Dr. Sebi’s holistic reputation grew as he successfully promoted optimal health based on a simple dietary theory – natural organic fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens; raw nuts and nut butters; and grains like quinoa and rye are alkaline for the body and encourage natural healing properties. A body in an alkaline state does not support infection and disease. He stressed that people should avoid toxic, dead foods, such as red meat, pork, poultry, seafood, as they kill your body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate healing. Other threats to natural healing are processed or synthetic items – sugar, alcohol, iodized salt, and fried foods. Dr. Sebi claimed to have cured several patients of AIDS, cancer, diabetes and blindness, and believed that with the right combination of herbs and natural practices, human illness could be cured.

Around the late 80s Dr. Sebi ran ads in the New York Post that read, “AIDS has been Cured.” The New York State Attorney General and the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs demanded he remove the ads. He refused to remove and stop posting these ads, and was arrested. He was charged with practicing medicine without a license, selling products not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and fraudulently claiming that he could cure AIDS, diabetes, lupus,  and other diseases. Per reports, the judge asked Dr. Sebi to bring in one patient who could testify that he had cured him or her of these diseases. Dr. Sebi provided not one, but seventy people whom he had treated to testify that he had healed them of their disease(s), and beat the lawsuit.

The lack of attention given to Dr. Sebi’s methods, and the lack of publicity surrounding his reported successes are probably because there’s no money in the cure—the money is in the sickness. He questioned why manufactured compounds are heavily advertised when they don’t work and aren’t absolutely necessary. Most of these pharmaceuticals are not cures; they mask symptoms while possibly creating more side effects. The healthcare industry profits from disease and other health related issues, thus proving that it isn’t anything more than a business.

On May 28, 2016, Dr. Sebi and his associate Pablo Medina Gamboa were arrested on charges of money laundering after arriving in Honduras from California. Money laundering sounded absolutely ridiculous to me. Think about it. California has one of the highest populations of health conscious people. Some of these people would be considered high-profile patients. Was it unlawful to be paid $50,000 in American currency for his healing services? If Dr. Sebi was aware of the true nature of the healthcare industry, isn’t it safe to say that he was also aware of how corrupt the financial system is? He was released pending a court hearing, but was rearrested June 3 by the Ministerio Público, Honduras’ version of the FBI, and charged yet again with money laundering.

While incarcerated in the overcrowded and unsanitary Honduras prison, Dr. Sebi’s health began to decline. He remained in custody until Aug. 6, when he was rushed to a local hospital reportedly suffering from complications of pneumonia. He was placed on pharmaceutical drugs, transported back to prison, and his health declined even faster. His family raced against the clock to get him released and during that time, his illness became critical and he passed away while being rushed to another local hospital. He was 82.

The reason most Dr. Sebi supporters believe that foul play was involved  is because, as I mentioned earlier, there’s been a trend of unexplained deaths among natural health influencers. Also, there was little to no media coverage, and it seems that his arrest records still have not been released, and that causes even more speculation.

“You don’t have to eat less, you just have to eat right.” – Dr. Sebi

Whatever the truth may be, Dr. Sebi left a legacy of authentic knowledge, love, and self-care behind. Dr. Sebi may not have been a modern medical doctor but he undoubtedly made an impact on the health-conscious community. Some people may call me a conspiracy theorist, but I believe that nature has a cure for everything, and man will destroy us all. Don’t you think it is much easier to accept and believe that organic and unprocessed fruit, vegetables, and herbs from nature are better for the human body? Please share your thoughts below.
