I’m back in New Orleans, and reconnecting with my old artists circle. Troy Poplous (director, performer, educator) directed the musical Ain’t Misbehavin’ at McDonough 35 College Prep. H.S. (New Orléans) and the show had outstanding reviews and ridiculously talented young performers. Thanks to the Consulate General of France, the cast got to go to France to perform as a part of the French Festival Banlieues Bleues festival, which is a famous jazz festival on the north edge of Paris. The cast worked with young students of the Jean Villar of La Courneuve middle school (France) and of the Conservatoire à Rayonnement régional d’Aubervilliers la Courneuve (Regional Conservatory).
In exchange, the French students got to come to New Orléans to put together a show full of poetry and dance, and perform it at Dillard University along the students from McDonough 35. On their last full day in New Orléans, we had a barbecue celebrating the talents and cultures of these students, and we all gathered to watch the documentary about their experience.
